Introducing MoraKey: a free, context-aware Vietnamese keyboard for Windows

MoraKey is a free Vietnamese input method for Windows. It supports the Telex and VNI typing styles, detects the app and input field you’re in to decide whether to type Vietnamese or leave English untouched, and includes text shortcuts. On launch day MoraKey went from version 1.1.0 to 1.3.3: the installer is ready to use right away, MoraKey starts with Windows, a system tray icon toggles it with one click, and several fixes improve typing in the browser address bar. The product page and download are at morakey.mora.vn.

New features 5

MoraKeyTelex and VNI typing

MoraKey supports Telex and VNI, the two most popular ways to type Vietnamese tone marks and accented letters on a standard keyboard using letter or number keys. It works in every Windows app: web browsers, Word, Excel, MORA Office and messaging apps.

MoraKeyContext awareness

MoraKey recognizes the app and input field in use to decide whether to apply Vietnamese typing or pass keys through unchanged; web address fields, domain names and password-like strings, for example, are left as typed. Every smart option can be turned off in the control panel.

MoraKeyText shortcuts

Type a short abbreviation to expand it into a full phrase or long name. Define your own on the Shortcuts (Gõ tắt) tab of the control panel.

MoraKeyV/E system tray icon

The tray icon shows V while Vietnamese typing is on and E when it’s off. Left-click to toggle quickly; right-click for the full menu in Vietnamese. Closing the window simply minimizes MoraKey to the tray.

MoraKeyProduct and download page

morakey.mora.vn offers an overview, downloads, a user guide, the changelog and a privacy commitment, with real screenshots of the control panel.

Improvements 5

MoraKeyReady after installation, starts with Windows

The installer opens the control panel when setup finishes and registers MoraKey to start with Windows; if you turn that option off, MoraKey respects your choice.

MoraKeyNo more automatic sentence capitalization

Starting with 1.3.0, MoraKey no longer capitalizes the first letter of a sentence, avoiding mistakes when typing domain names or decimal numbers, or when clicking into the middle of a paragraph to edit.

MoraKeyNew icon in the MORA identity

A clean line-drawn keyboard icon with an acute accent, following the MORA visual identity, is used consistently in the tray, the installer and on the website.

MoraKeyBackspace means a manual edit

Starting with 1.3.3, pressing Backspace deletes exactly one visible character; MoraKey no longer re-places tone marks or re-guesses the word, so text on screen doesn’t jump unexpectedly.

MoraKeyTransparent, optional MORA connection

MoraKey sends only a one-way hashed device ID, its version and language to receive messages from MORA, and never sends anything you type. The MORA connection option on the System tab turns networking off entirely.

Fixes 3

MoraKeyNo more doubled letters in the browser address bar

Typing tooi in an address bar with autocomplete suggestions used to produce toôi; since 1.3.1 it correctly produces tôi.

MoraKeyRepeating a tone key now cancels the mark correctly

Typing tess now gives tes (mark cancelled) instead of keeping both s keys, while genuine English double letters such as office are left intact.

MoraKeyVietnamese typing works normally in the address bar

The rule forcing English in the browser address bar has been removed, including on computers with older versions installed, so you can search in Vietnamese straight from the address bar.
